FSG delivers versatile project cargo carrier

JUNE 11, 2014 — German shipbuilder Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft (FSG) has handed over RollDock Storm, the second of two versatile 151.5 m long, 8,000 dwt project cargo carriers, to RollDock BV of the Netherlands.

RollDock Storm and sister ship RollDockStar, delivered in January, are designed to carry the widest pos­sible range of project cargo. Loading and unloading of cargo can be handled in three completely different ways. The ships have adjustable stern ramps and hatch covers which can be adapted to differing quay heights in ports and so permit the loading or unloading of individual cargo up to 3,200 tons in weight in the classic RoRo manner. They also each have two heavy lift cranes that can move cargo weighing up to 700 tons when working in tandem. Finally the ships can be submerged by more than six meters to allow cargo to be floated in or out.

Since delivery from the shipyard in January, the first ship, RollDock Star, has already carried a floating pavilion from Amsterdam to Gibraltar, a river cruise ship from Fos to Bordeaux and a submarine from Kaliningrad to Vietnam.

“Ships like this, as well as individual offshore ships, are now the future of FSG and follow on from our successes in the RoRo sector,” says FSG CEO Peter Sierk, “this demonstrates that we are now clearly moving into an extremely demanding and very specialized sector.”
