MAY 2, 2016 —  Carnival Corporation’s 706 passenger Adonia, operated by its Fathom brand, made history today by becoming the first cruise ship from the U.S. to dock in Havana, Cuba, in more than 50 years.

Passengers tweeted pictures of crowds waiting to greet the ship as they prepared to disembark. And in what’s perhaps an indication of all the red tape involved in making the voyage, Hatzel Vega of Miami’s ABC Channel 10 tweeted that the first passenger to disembark would be Carnival Corporation counsel Arnie Perez.

All the formalities were obviously successfully concluded. One of Mr. Vega’s next tweets was of the first Cuban-born passenger on the ship being warmly welcomed.
