DSME orders ME-GI engines for BW Gas newbuilds

OCTOBER 11, 2014 — MAN Diesel & Turbo has booked an order for four dual fuel MAN B&W 5G70ME-GI engines. They have been ordered for two 173,400 cu.m. LNG carriers to be built for B&W Group at Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering’s Okpo shipyard in Geoje, South Korea.

The deal is the second LNG carrier ME-GI contract for DSME.

The two BW Group newbuilds have delivery dates in late 2017/early 2018 and the ME-GI engines have been specified for IMO Tier II compliance, with options to include remedies for Tier III compliance at a later stage.

Tier III compliance calls for an 80% reduction in NOx emissions in ECA areas compared with Tier I. MAN Diesel & Turbo has successfully developed two main approaches to meeting the NOx reduction target —Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) and Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR). Both approaches enable compliance with the most stringent regulations and customers’ choice of which to use will depend on such factors as distances traveled within ECA zones as a percentage of total ship usage, different ownership models and different engine operation profiles.

Dual fuel ME-GI engines give operators the choice of using either oil or gas fuel, depending on relative price and availability as well as environmental considerations.

The ME-GI engine uses high pressure gas injection that enables it to maintain the many positive attributes of MAN B&W low speed engines. In gas operation, the ME-GI delivers significant reductions in emissions with negligible methane slip.
