MAY 15, 2017 — Former Costa Concordia captain Francesco Schettino began serving a 16-year prison term Friday after Italy’s Supreme Court upheld his sentence and lower court convictions for manslaughter, causing a shipwreck and abandoning ship.

Thirty two of the 4,200 people aboard the Costa Cruises mega cruise ship died after it rammed into a rocky outcropping off the island of Giglio on Jan. 13, 2012.

Schettino was among the first off the vessel, leading headline writers to call him “Captain Coward.”

Schettino is in Rome’s Rebibbia prison where he turned himself in, voluntarily, once the Supreme Court ruling was known. He did so, apparently, in order to avoid photographs of an arrest and being handcuffed.

For the last five years, Schettino has been living at home as the case wound through the courts.
