Concordia Maritime orders two 50,000 dwt chemical parcel tankers from Chinese shipyard

JUNE 21, 2012 — Hans Norén, President of Gothenburg, Sweden, based Concordia Maritime, says that “the timing as regards shipbuilding is right,” as the company reports the signing of a contract with Guangzhou Shipbuilding International (GSI), China for two 50,000 dwt chemical parcel tankers.

Concordia says the investment involved is around SEK 550 million (about $79 million). Deliveries are set for thr end of 2014/beginning of 2015. The vessels will be employed in the open market via Stena Weco, a joint venture formed a little over a year ago  between Stena Bulk and Denmark’s Dannebrog.

The vessels are part of a series of six tankers designed by Stena Weco and Stena Bulk and developed by Stena Teknik together with the shipbuilder. During the development work, the focus has been on energy efficiency and cargo flexibility.

“The vessels’ design and performance are impressive and GSI is a leading Chinese shipyard, which builds very good vessels,” says Mr. Norén. He says the move is “a natural development for us, investing in vessels with very good fuel efficiency and cargo capacity that will be employed in the segment where our main focus lies and which has good growth potential.”
