One Sea, an industry alliance that aims to lead the way towards an operating autonomous maritime ecosystem by 2025, has appointed Riku-Pekka Hägg as Chairman of its Management Board.

Hägg will oversee One Sea while retaining his current role as Vice President, Ship Design and Integrated Solutions Sales at Wärtsilä, where his current focus is on leading business transformation with particular emphasis on smart technologies. In his current position he is also responsible for overseeing Wärtsilä’s Smart and Autonomous Ship strategy.

Hägg, who was previously Vice Chair of One Sea, says his interest will remain focused on connecting businesses with the possibilities new digital technologies create for safety, efficiency, growth and profitability to enable sustainable shipping.

In addition to Wärtsilä, One Sea members include: ABB, Cargotec, Ericsson, Inmarsat, Kongsberg Maritime, MTI (Monohakobi Technology Institute – NYK Group’s research subsidiary), Tieto and Wärtsilä. Other partners include Finnish Marine Industries, Finnpilot Pilotage, Finnish Port Association, Finnish Shipowners’ Association, Shipbrokers Finland and The Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA).

One Sea is an open ecosystem that can be joined by anyone who intends to do business in autonomous shipping. Financing is provided by participating companies and Business Finland. One Sea ecosystem is led by DIMECC Ltd (Digital, Internet, Materials & Engineering Co-Creation), which describes itself as “the co-creation platform that seeks to drive digital transformation across European industry.”
