Costa Concordia wreck arrives in Genoa

JULY 27, 2014 — The wreck of the cruise ship Costa Crociere has arrived safely in Genoa, Italy, for recycling. Preparatory operations for its entry into the port began at 5.00 a.m. this morning local time when harbor pilots boarded the ship.

Complex mooring operations began with transfering the towage and handling of the vessel from the Resolve Earl and Blizzard, the two tugboats that brought the vessel to Genoa, to harbor tugs.

Later, Costa Crociere CEO Michael Thamm went onboard the wreck to meet with senior salvage master Nick Sloane of Titan Salvage and his team.

“I wanted to personally thank Nick Sloane and the whole team for the extraordinary commitment they have always demonstrated throughout the project and wish them good work at the beginning of an important day of complex mooring operations,” said Mr.Thamm.

At 3.40 pm, a document was signed transfering ownership of the ship from Carnival Corporation subsidiary Costa Crociere to the Saipem/San Giorgio consortium that will scrap the vessel. The document ruled that the sale was for the specific purpose of demolishing and recycling the wreck as agreed and in accordance with the conditions set forth by the Italian authorities and in particular by the Ministry of Environment.
