Parker Towing Company, Tuscaloosa, Ala., has recently taken delivery of the twin-screw towboat Jared Phillips from FMT Shipyard & Repair LLC, Harvey, La.

Measuring 128 feet in length and 34 feet in width, the vessel was designed by FMT in consultation with John Gilbert of Gilbert Associates of Hingham, Maine.

It is powered by two 16-cylinder Caterpillar model 3516 diesel engines, delivering 4,200 horsepower through 7.08 to 1 Reintjes reduction gears and will be in service on the Warrior-Tombigbee, Tenn-Tom, Tennessee, Ohio, Upper and Lower Mississippi rivers, Intracoastal East Waterways, and Mobile Bay.

Eagle Control Systems, Baton Rouge, La., did all of the main switch gear work, a complete steering system, complete engine alarm system, shaft tachometer system, captain down system, and wired the entire boat.

The vessel is named in honor of Jared Phillips, Director of Business Operations at Parker Towing Company. He joined Parker Towing in 2011 and during this time he has contributed in multiple roles including Manager of Technology and Operations, Project Manager for the company’s new freight and contract operations software system, and barge freight/contract pricing. He currently leads the Tuscaloosa office dispatch department and information technology initiatives.
