SEPTEMBER 11, 2016—Today marks the 15th anniversary of the 9-11 terrorist attacks that claimed thousands of lives at the World Trade Center in New York, the Pentagon in Washington, DC, and onboard Flight 93 in Shanksville, PA.

Some of us at Marine Log were able to watch the entire horrific attacks on the Twin Towers unfold before our eyes from the 12th floor windows of our old offices at 345 Hudson Street. We saw the towers burn, shake, wobble, and finally collapse to the ground in an acrid cloud of debris and smoke. It’s an image that we will never forget.

But we also witnessed the best of the human spirit and the efforts of the maritime industry, first responders, and private citizens that came together in an impromptu evacuation of thousands from the choking cloud that engulfed Lower Manhattan.

You can read more about the maritime industry’s response in “The maritime industry and 9/11: Spirit of service & duty,” written by James Kendra, Director, Disaster Research Center at the University of Delaware, for the September 2016 issue of Marine Log or our original account written just days after the attacks and response for our October 2001 issue.
