Ship will be able to supply both LNG and IMO 2020 compliant low sulphur fuel

A bunkering tanker just ordered at shipbuilder Japan Marine United will be the first in Asia able to supply both LNG and IMO 2020 compliant low sulfur fuel.

The ship has been ordered by Yokohama headquartered Ecobunker Shipping Co., Ltd., a joint venture between Sumitomo Corporation, Yokohama-Kawasaki International Port Corporation and Uyeno Transtech Ltd. The decision to place the order came after the three companies jointly studied the commercial feasibility of ship-to-ship LNG bunkering in Tokyo Bay and decided to move ahead with the aim of starting services in 2020.

The vessel will have an LNG tank capacity of 2,500 cu.m, said to be sufficient to fuel a round trip between Asia and North America by a Panamax containership. The fuel oil tank will have a capacity of 1,500 cu.m and could be converted to an LNG tank, depending on LNG fuel demand growth in Tokyo Bay.
