Dutch short sea specialist orders six ships in India

MARCH 23, 2017 — Delfzijl, Netherlands, based shipping company Wijnne Barends reports that it recently placed an order with Goa, India, shipbuilder Chowgule & Company for the construction of six identical, energy-efficient vessels.

The vessels, with a deadweight capacity of about 4,200 tons and a length of 98 m, will have a cargo hold capacity of more than 6,000 cu.m.

They are designed to meet IMO Tier III environmental requirements. From 2021, these standards will apply in Wijnne Barends’ main area of operations, the North – and Baltic seas. Because their trading region, they will be built to meet the highest Swedish/Finnish ice class.

The delivery of the first ship from the shipyard has been scheduled for the last quarter of 2018. The vessels will be added to the company’s existing (Lady-H) series at intervals of four months.

Wijnne Barends is investing heavily in energy saving and environmental care and says it is the only Dutch shipping company with short-sea vessels that are equipped with exhaust gas scrubbers.
