Ferries are of Multi Maritime's MM 55 FC LNG design

FEBRUARY 10, 2014 — Norway’s Fiskerstrand shipyard has received an order from Boreal Transport Nord AS for two new LNG fueled ferries designed by Multi Maritime AS.

The ferries have electric power transmission, with one LNG driven genset and one diesel driven genset as backup. Two azimuth thrusters provide the propulsion.

To be delivered in the second half of 2015, they will be used on routes originating in Øksfjord in the northernmost county in Norway, Finnmark, and Boreal Transport Nord will operate them on behalf of the Finnmark County Council.

The 62.6 m x 13.5 m ferries have a single closed vehicle deck with space for 40 cars and a passenger lounge for 100 passengers.

The routes are exposed to open sea, and seakeeping was an important issue in their design.

Multi Maritime says that another design challenge was that the air draft of the vessels had to be limited to 15 m as one of the ferry terminals, Hasvik, is situated at the end of the runway at Hasvik airport.

The new ferries will be the first gas-powered ferries in the Boreal Transport fleet.
