Strategic Marine building series of 10 crewboats

42m crewboat nearing completion at Strategic's Vietnam shipyard

JANUARY 3, 2014—Australia’s Strategic Marine has a strong reputation for building high-performance crewboats. Currently, they are building a series of ten 42-meter boats with steel hulls and aluminum superstructures for Burnei’s PTAS Marine. The new boats are based on the 40-meter aluminum crewboat model designed by Australia’s Incat Crowther in conjunction with Strategic Marine. The first two hulls and superstructures were fabricated at Strategic’s Vietnam shipyard. They were barged to the Singapore yard for completion and fitting out prior to delivery. Those boats are named the PTAS M/V One and the PTAS M/V Eagle.

The balance of eight vessels are being built to completion at Strategic’s Vietnam yard for delivery between this month and June 2014. Each boat will have three IMO Tier II-compliant Cummins propulsion engines. The engines include a Cummins KTA50-M2 mounted in the center, delivering 1,800 hp at 1,900 rev/min, straddled by two Cummins KTA38-M2 engines each delivering 1,350 hp at 1,900 rev/min. The three engines will deliver a total of 4,500 hp to three fixed-pitch propellers through Twin Disc marine gears to drive the vessels at 20 knots at 85% MCR at 40 dwt.

Each boat has accommodations for 12 crew members, 30 rig workers and, in the event of emergency, 100 survivors. The 100 m³ of clear deck space, with a 3.5 ton per m², will take up to 10 tons of cargo. Classed by Lloyd’s Register, the crewboats are fitted with two Cummins 6BT5.9-powered 80 kW generators. An additional 425 hp Cummins QSJ11-D(M) engine powers each boat’s two 160 hp bow thrusters. The boats are also fit with 1,200 m³ per hour fire pumps with monitors.

While the more robust steel hulls add to the vessels’ weight, they lend additional strength and durability.

The eight remaining boats will be named: PTAS M/V Tiger, PTAS M/V Marine, PTAS M/V Water, PTAS M/V Ocean, PTAS M/V Rose, PTAS M/V Blue Sea, PTAS M/V Green Earth, and PTAS M/V Tide.
