Havyard books orders for two icebreaking OSVs

NOVEMBER 21, 2014 — Norway’s Havyard Ship Technology AS has signed contracts worth a total of just over NOK 1 billion (about $147.5 million) for the design and building of two more Havyard 843 Ice offshore icebreakers

In November 2013, Havyard Ship Technology signed a contract covering construction of a Havyard 843 Ice icebreaking offshore vessel for Russia’s FEMCO Group. An undisclosed international shipping company has now ordered two vessels of the same type, but with some minor design changes that include bigger winches, SPS (Special Purpose Ship) classification and increased accommodations capacity. They will also be prepared for the installation of an offshore crane.

The contract for the second vessel includes what is described as “a minor subject to be lifted by Havyard.”

Designed by Havyard Design & Solutions in Fosnavåg, the vesselswill be built at Havyard Ship Technology’s shipyard in Leirvik in Sogn. The ships, which will be assigned the newbuild numbers 128 and 129, are scheduled for delivery in the fourth quarter 2016.

Havyard’s Leirvik shipyard has delivered seven offshore icebreakers since 1995, in addition to the three that are now currently on order.

The Havyard 843 Ice design was developed by Havyard Design & Solutions in connection with the contract that was signed last year. The ships will have DnV ice class Icebreaker Ice 10 and Winterized Cold (-30 °C). Among other things, this means that the ship can break ice that is more than 1 m thick and that it has a system to prevent icing of the ship.

The ship is designed for anchor-handling, towing and for use in emergency response operations in connection with oil spills and rescue services.
