MARCH 6, 2015—Edison Chouest Offshore (ECO) has selected Cat’s EPA Tier 4 Final-compliant C280-16 generator sets for two new ice class, diesel-electric-powered Multi-Purpose Supply Vessels (MPSVs) under construction at ECO’s La Ship in Houma, LA.

The project is one of the largest diesel electric propulsion (DEP) configurations that Caterpillar Marine has ever produced. Four Cat C280-16 generator sets, each rated at 5,060 kW at 900 rev/min, will power each MPSV for a total of 20,240 kW.

Bart Long, Caterpillar Marine key account manager, says the company values “delivering innovative, sustainable solutions for the marine industry and we’re proud to provide Chouest with reliable power that will meet Tier 4 Final emission standards.”

Manufactured in Lafayette, IN, Cat C280 generator sets build upon 20 years of component reliability and durability from Cat’s well-proven 3600 series, with a modern electronic fuel injection system. In addition to a proven track record as a marine industry workhorse, the C280 has been engineered to offer customers improved performance along with reduced smoke and extended maintenance intervals. The C280 has a bore of 280 mm and stroke of 300 mm.

To meet EPA Tier 4 regulations, Caterpillar uses after-treatment combined with a fuel efficiency optimized engine to meet the low NOx emission standards. The C280 Tier 4 Final solution employs selective catalyst reduction (SCR) technology, which will provide customers with the lowest possible owning and operating costs. The SCR module was designed with the engine room in mind with compact dimensions.

“The C280 generator sets are incredibly popular in offshore applications, offering customers the lowest possible emissions technology in the industry while also providing the lowest owning and operating costs,” says Nathan Kelly, Caterpillar Marine product definition engineer. Says Kelly, “Customers come to us knowing we’ll engineer a solution to successfully perform for their specific needs.”
