MARCH 18, 2014 — What is said to be the world’s largest containership propeller was loaded onto the containership Hyundai Together at the HHLA Container Terminal Altenwerder, Hamburg, Germany, this past Saturday at about noon.

The HHLA IV floating crane lifted the giant five-bladed propeller, measuring 10.3 m in diameter and weighing 113 tonnes, from a pontoon and into the the ship.

The propeller was manufactured by Mecklenburger Metallguss GmbH in Waren, Germany, and transported to Hamburg by road at the end of February.

The propeller is headed for a South Korean shipyard where it will be installed on an 18,000 TEU containership newbuilding and matched to an 85,000 hp. engine.

Six more ship propellers of this kind are to be transshipped via the Port of Hamburg this year, with the next shipment due to take place at the beginning of June.
