Auto Eco and sister ship will be able to complete 14 days Baltic round trip voyage burning solely LNG

SEPTEMBER 30, 2015 – European short sea operator United European Car Carriers (UECC), has taken delivery of the world’s first LNG-fueled Pure Car and Truck Carrier from Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd.’s NACKS shipyard in Nantong, China.

To be named Auto Eco on its arrival in Northern Europe in November, the vessel is the first of two dual-fuel vessels designed to meet strict Northern European SECA emissions limit. In addition they are built to Finnish/Swedish ice class 1A super, allowing for full-year trading in the Baltic area.

With a total loading car capacity of 3,985 units, the 181 m x 30 m vessels each have a MAN B&W 8S50ME-C8.2-GI main engine and are the largest PCTC’s specially designed for trading in the Baltic and other ice-prone areas.

They are able to complete a fourteen day round trip Baltic voyage using solely LNG fuel.

UECC is a joint venture between Japan’s NYK Line and Sweden’s Wallenius Lines.

Wallenius acted as newbuilding consultants during the vessel’s 380 day construction.

At the formal hand over ceremony at the shipyard yesterday, Mr. Glenn Edvardsen, CEO of UECC, said, “We at UECC are very proud of the ship which NACKS has built for us. We look forward to showing the world and the shipping industry that we are the game changer with the addition of this marvelous advanced PCTC with LNG dual fuel technology.”
