SEPTEMBER 22, 2017 — South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries has developed a new proprietary LNG regasification system for LNG Floating Storage and Regasification Units (FSRU).

The system utilizes glycol to regasify LNG into gas and was yesterday showcased before an audience of 40 representatives from 19 ship owning companiesm including FSRU leaders Golar LNG, Hoegh LNG and GasLog.

Called S-Regas(GI), the new system is SHI’s latest regasification achievement, following its development of a direct sea water regasification system. According to SHI, the glycol based solution reduces the chances of corrosion in comparison to the traditional method of heating LNG directly with seawater, and gives energy savings of 5%.

Using an in-house regasification system not only means cost savings for the shipbuilder but also enables improvements in schedule and quality management, says SH
