Rolls-Royce to power 17 Qatar Coastguard patrol craft

FEBRUARY 25, 2015 — Rolls-Royce has secured a £15.8 million contract to supply Rolls-Royce MTU high-speed engines and a suite of waterjet propulsion systems for 17 fast patrol vessels under construction at Turkey’s Ares Shipyard for the Qatar Coastguard.

“For optimum fuel economy at high-speeds the combination of Rolls-Royce MTU diesels and Kamewa waterjets are major contributors to the enhanced efficiency and performance of these highly capable craft,” added Mr. Roussinos. “In particular our A3 model of waterjet offers high performance up to speeds of around 45 knots.”

The scope of supply for Rolls-Royce is extensive, with a total of 46 engines and waterjets, across three different sizes of craft.

MTU 12V2000M84 diesel engines and Rolls-Royce Kamewa 50A3 series waterjets will be installed on five 24-m Ares 75 Hercules patrol boats and ten 34-m Ares 110 Hercules design boats.

The two largest craft, of 47-m Ares 150 Hercules design, will each feature three MTU Series 4000 diesels and twin 71S4 water jets with B4 boosters.

With power outputs up to 2,060 kW, the Kamewa A3 series delivers up to 3% better energy-efficiency compared to the earlier model. This, together with a reduced footprint on the vessel, lower weight and life-cycle costs, equates to a substantial reduction in fuel costs and CO2 emissions.

Ares Shipyard is located in Antalya on the South Coast of Turkey and has been operating since 2006. It is a specialist in the manufacture of fast patrol craft for up to 70 m in length for military and homeland security purposes, as well as for civil applications.
