Sewol captain Lee Joon-seok faces death penalty

OCTOBER 27, 2014 — South Korean prosecutors today asked Gwangju District Court to impose the death penalty on Lee Joon-seok, the captain of the ferry Sewol that capsized in April with the loss of more than 300 lives.

Lee and three other crew members — chief and second mate Kang Won-sik and Kim Young-ho and chief engineer, Park Gi-ho — are charged with homicide through willful negligence.

The prosecution is seeking life sentences for the two mates and the chief engineer and sentences of 15 to 30 years on 11 other crew members.

Even if the court does impose a death sentence, Lee is unlikely to face execution as South Korea has a moratorium on capital punishment.
