Nordic Yards to build two rescue and salvage vessels

DECEMBER 26, 2012 —   Germany’s Nordic Yards, with shipyards in Wismar and Warnemünde, has signed a EUR 150 million contract for the construction of two ice-breaking rescue and salvage vessels for the Russian Ministry of Transport for delivery in Spring 2015. The vessels will operate on the northern polar sea route in the Arctic, in the region of Murmansk, and in Sakhalin.

“With these orders, we are once again underlining the validity of our strategy and our focus on extremely sophisticated products,” says Vitaly Yusufov, Managing Director of Nordic Yards. “I am particularly pleased about the fact that we have laid the foundation stone for our high level of credibility on the Russian market, which is very important to us.”

The 86 m long by 19 m wide rescue and salvage vessels are to be built to the second highest ice class and, in addition to search and rescue, can be used for icebreaking operations in harbors and waters with an ice thickness of one meter as well as for fire-fighting and combating oil spills from the sea.

Financing will be provided by the Russian state and has already been secured for both projects. The total volume of the orders is 150 million euros. One of the Russian Top 5 banks oversees the projects.
