MHI-MME delivers world’s largest steering gear

DFT 1150 steering gear

JANUARY 30, 2017 — Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Marine Machinery & Engine Co., Ltd. (MHI-MME) has delivered the electro-hydraulic steering gear that will be installed in the world’s largest 20,000 TEU mega containership, being built at Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Ltd.’s Saijo, Japan, shipyard.

The DFT-1150 is the world’s largest size of steering gear and has a torque at maximum working oil pressure of 11,307 kN-m.

MHI-MME has also received orders for DFT-1150, DFT-870 and DFT-760 large-size electro-hydraulic steering gears for 20,000TEU and 14,000 TEU containerships to be built at Imabari Shipbuilding’s Marugame and Hiroshima Shipyards .

Production of Mitsubishi Electro-Hydraulic Steering Gears commenced in 1935, since when over 10,000 units of various sizes have been produced.

MHI-MME has made technical licensing agreements with Yoowon Industries Ltd. in Korea and Jiangsu Masada Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. in China to help meet global market needs for its steering gears.
