Fire breaks out at Suez Canal container terminal

MAY 3, 2016 — Inchcape Shipping Services (ISS) is reporting that a fire broke out in the early hours of Tuesday morning, May 3, at the Suez Canal Container Terminal, Egypt, following the collision of a vessel with a container crane in berth seven. One of the containers damaged in the accident contained chemicals, resulting in a large explosion at the site.
Fire fighting forces and civil defence have now controlled the fire at the terminal which is believed to have resulted when vessel was maneuvering from the quay to join a southbound convoy. The stern of the 360 metre ship collided with container crane 17 at the port
No casualties are reported but all operations within the terminal are currently halted. ISS Egypt is working with its clients to minimise delays and will keep them updated.
