Canada’s Groupe Desgagnés recently took delivery of the fourth and final ship in a series of custom designed LNG dual-fueled oil/chemical tankers ordered from the Besiktas Shipyard, located in Yalova near Istanbul, Turkey.

The vessel, the M/T Rossi A. Desgagnés, is expected to arrive in Canada mid-June, where it will join M/T Gaïa Desgagnés (ex-Fure Vinga), the just over one year old LNG dual-fueled tanker acquired last month from Sweden’s Furetank Rederi.

Groupe Desgagnés says that the two ships represent an investment exceeding C$100 million (about US$74 million) and that the Rossi A. Desgagnés represents an investment exceeding C$50 million, of which almost C$9 million is solely dedicated to the LNG dual-fuel engining.

(As C$100 million minus C$50 mllion equals C$50 million, it would seem that Desgagnés paid Furetank C$50 million for the Fure Vinga, though the value of the transaction was not disclosed at the time).

Desgagnés gets some financial support for its newbuilding program through a Québec Transport Ministry contribution of C$1,000 per ton of reduced or avoided GHG emissions, up to a maximum of $3 million allocated by a program related to the improvement of transportation efficiency and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions (PETMAF).

The company now owns five LNG dual-fuel tankers.

The Rossi A. Desgagnés is double-hulled and holds a Polar 7 ice class, confirming her capacity to navigate in ice-laden waters. With a deadweight of 15,000 tons at 7.8 meters draft, her cargo tanks can hold up to 17,505 cu.m at 98% capacity. She is equipped with a Wärtsilä 5RT-flex 50DF engine developing 5,450 kW power. The ship is equipped with a variable pitch propeller, a 750 kW bow thruster, a 550 kW stern thruster and a dynamic positioning system.
