Costa Concordia to be scrapped in Genoa

Installation of sponsons continues to progress

JUNE 30, 2014 — Italian media report that the Costa Concordia will be scrapped in Genoa. Though the formal government approval needed has not yet been given, Transport Minister Maurizio Lupi said today that he could confirm that the cruise ship will be scrapped “in an Italian port.”

According to Il Sole 24 Ore, Carnival Corporation subsidiary Costa Crociere has chosen the consortium consisting of oil service company Saipem and Genoa-based companies Mariotti and San Giorgio.

It added that Costa had decided to begin the delicate operation to refloat the vessel on July 20.

Meantime, installation of the 15 sponsons needed to refloat the vessel continues. Earlier this week, six had been installed, two more were set for installation and one was undergoing repair in Genoa.
