Triple-EMaersk Line will invest $1.9 billion more in expanding its Asia-Europe containership fleet, after it exercised an option with Korea’s Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co., Ltd. to build 10 more Triple-E class containerships. Overall, Maersk is investing $3.8 billion for 20 of the 18,000 TEU boxships.

As we reported back in February on marinelog.com and the March 2011 issue of Marine Log, Maersk announced the signing of a $1.9 billion order with Daewoo for 10 Triple-E containerships with two options, each for an additional 10 ships. The company has until December 2011 to decide on the last option.

At the signing ceremony in Tokyo, Japan, Maersk Line CEO Eivind Kolding, said the Triple-E Class ships “underline our strong commitment to the Asia-Europe trade and fit well with our current ambitions and expectations for the future development of the trade. We believe the Triple-E ships with their record capacity and energy efficiency will enable us to deliver on the commercial and environmental expectations of our customers and also give us a significant competitive advantage in the market.”

When the first Triple-E Class ships are delivered in 2013, they will be the largest in the world, with a capacity of 18,000 TEU–16% percent larger than the company’s Emma Maersk. The ships will help the company meet the projected growth of 5 to 8% in the Asia to Europe trade over the next four years. The first 10 vessels will be delivered 2013 and 2014; the second 10 vessels are scheduled for delivery in 2014 and 2015.

“Triple-E” stands for economy of scale, energy efficiency and environmentally improved. The 400m x 59m x 73m Triple-E Class ships will produce 20% less CO2 per container moved compared to Emma Maersk and 50% less than the industry average on the Asia-Europe trade lane. Additionally, Maersk says that they will burn about 35% less fuel per container than the 13,100 TEU vessels being delivered to other container shipping lines in the next few years, also for Asia-Europe service.
