settoon_towboatEastern Shipbuilding Group, Inc., Panama City, FL, recently delivered the third in a series of four 2,600 hp Canal Class inland towboats to Settoon Towing LLC, Pierre Part, LA.

Over the last few years, Eastern Shipbuilding has been one of the most diverse shipbuilders in the U.S., with orders for offshore support vessels, ferries, tugs and towboats. Over a five-year period, Eastern Shipbuilding has delivered 58 towboats.

The new towboat for Settoon, christened the James J. Perera, is a sister vessel to the Austin C. Settoon and Parker A. Settoon. Each vessel has a length of 96 ft, beam of 34 ft and depth of 10 ft. The main propulsion plant consists of two EPA Tier II-compliant, Caterpillar 3512C electronically controlled marine diesel engines, each rated at 1,300 hp at 1,200 rev/min, driving two Twin Disc MGX-5600 direct coupled reverse reduction gears.

Electric power is supplied by two EPA Tier II-compliant John Deere 6068AFM76, 99 kW electronic-governor diesel generators. Steering is accomplished with the installation of two main steering rudders and four flanking rudders, all controlled by an electro-hydraulic control system from Hydra Force, LLC, Belle Chase, LA.
