JUNE 12, 2014 —The Diversified Marine shipyard in Portland, OR, has begun construction of twin sister tugs for Harley Marine Services, Seattle, WA. Designed by Robert Allan, the 5,200 bhp tugs are each 80 ft in length, with a 65 ton bollard pull. They are expected to be completed in March and June of 2015.

Harley Marine Services says it is to name the tugs the Michelle Sloan and the Lela Franco after two remarkable women that are very important to the company. Michelle Sloan is a longtime family friend of Chairman and CEO, Harley Franco and his wife, Lela. Michelle is currently battling breast cancer and she has been a tremendous community supporter and philanthropist. The other tug, Lela Franco, is named after Harley Franco’s wife. Lela has made many contributions to Harley Marine in the areas of culture, core values, office design and commitment to the environment.

The vessels will be the fifth and sixth new built tractor tugs added to the HMS fleet in just under two years and will enhance Harley Marine’s ship assist and tanker escort business by bringing more horsepower and presence to the market.
