donjon cranesDonjon Marine has successfully refloat the 277-foot ex-Staten Island, N.Y. car ferry Gov. Herbert H. Lehman.

The former ferry sank in the Hudson River while in layup in Newburg, N.Y., and Donjon was awarded the contract to refloat it in late March 2012 in a competitive bidding process.

After almost four weeks of patching and test-pumping the submerged hull, and with the use of Donjon’s 1,000-ton capacity derrick barge Chesapeake 1000 to stabilize the vessel during refloating, the vessel was successfully refloated and returned to owners.

“This is just another example of Donjon’s ability to perform in a professional and cost-effective manner,” said Donjon EVP John Witte, Jr. “Donjon Salvage Master Bill Kratz and his salvage team have illustrated once again Donjon’s ability and dedication to the continuing salvage needs of the marine community.”

Donjon Marine’s services include dredging, marine salvage, heavy lift transport, tug/barge transportation, demolition, pollution control and remediation, shipbuilding and repair, as well as land-based metals recycling, demolition and landfill remediation/site management. Based in New York and New Jersey, Donjon and its affiliates maintain offices assets and personnel throughout the Northeast, with operations spanning the globe.
