Crowley takes delivery of first LNG-ready Jones Act tanker

Crowley says the delivery is momentous not only for Crowley, but also for the industry because it is the first time a product tanker has been constructed with consideration for the future use of LNG as fuel. The remaining three ships in the series have planned deliveries through 2016.

The ships are based on a proven Hyundai Mipo Dockyards (HMD) design which incorporates numerous fuel efficiency features, flexible cargo capability, and meets the latest regulatory requirements. The vessel is 600 feet long and is capable of carrying crude oil or refined petroleum products.

Crowley’s Seattle-based, naval architecture and marine engineering subsidiary Jensen Maritime is providing construction management services for the product tankers. Jensen now has an on-site office and personnel at the Philadelphia shipyard to ensure strong working relationships with shipyard staff and a seamless construction and delivery program.

“We are excited to offer our customers cutting-edge technology available in these new tankers, which not only embraces operational excellence and top safety, but also offers the potential to be powered by environmentally friendly LNG in the future,” said Crowley’s Rob Grune, senior vice president and general manager, petroleum and chemical transportation. “Adding these new Jones Act tankers to our fleet allows us to continue providing our customers with diverse and modern equipment to transport their petroleum and chemical products in a safe and reliable manner.”

“We are proud to have Crowley as a repeat customer at the shipyard and to deliver another quality tanker to them. This vessel continues our strong history of building ships here in Philadelphia,” said Aker Philadelphia President and CEO Steinar Nerbovik.

Bristol Harbor Group adds two new members to team

Over the past three months Zachary Gilfus, naval architect, and Marissa Stutzman, mechanical engineer, have joined the team.

Zachary Gilfus joined BHGI at the end of August, 2015 as a naval architect and marine engineer.

Mr. Gilfus graduated this past spring from Webb Institute in Glen Cove, NY, with a Bachelor’s of Science in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. During his time at Webb, Zach interned at four different companies including Carnival Cruise Lines and General Dynamics NASSCO. He was given the American Bureau of Shipping Stevenson Taylor Award for best thesis.

Mr. Gilfus passed the fundamentals of engineering exam in the spring of 2015 and was recently approved as a New York State Engineer in Training.

Marissa Stutzman joined BHGI as a mechanical engineer in June of 2015. She graduated on the dean’s list in the spring of 2015 from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY, with a Bachelor’s of Science in Biomedical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering.

At Rensselaer, Ms. Stutzman worked on four different engineering projects. During her academic career she was the team captain for an NCAA Division III swimming and diving team and was active in many clubs and societies including the Society of Women Engineers and the Women’s Mentor Program.

Webb Institute launches $40 million fund raising campaign

“Webb has a unique challenge, as the demand for our graduates exceeds supply; each year, 100% of our students receive meaningful job offers or pursue advanced degrees,” said Webb’s President, R. Keith Michel. “It is imperative that we respond to industry demand; build upon our facilities to provide students access to cutting-edge technology; and, sustain the financial model of providing each and every one of our students with a full-tuition scholarship.”

The effort will be led by a Campaign Cabinet of alumni, trustees, past parents, and friends.  Chaired by Joseph Cuneo ’57, its members are:  John Couch (honorary alumnus), Alison Granger (parent of alumnus), Roy Johnson ’62, John Malone ’71, R. Keith Michel ’73, Jake Neuman ’93, Anthony Urbanelli ’75; and honorary members Arthur Burr ’54 and Harold Lenfest (honorary alumnus).

Five Cornerstone investments (contributions of $2.5 million or more) have already been secured, four of them from members of the Campaign Cabinet.  The momentum generated means that $22.8 million of the $40 million goal has been secured.

“Making an investment in Webb is making an investment in the best, simply put – the best education, the most promising students, the opportunity to make the greatest industry impact,” said Joseph J. Cuneo.  “I’m honored to serve as the Campaign Chair and welcome the responsibility to help secure the future financial well-being of Webb.”

Of the $40 million Campaign goal, $28 million will be raised to strengthen the endowment and ensure the sustainability of the full-tuition scholarship model, and $12 million will be earmarked for facilities improvement, headed by the establishment of a Faculty & Research Center and an expansion of the on-campus residence halls.

“Webb Institute’s goal is to attract top students who display a passion and an aptitude for engineering,” said Mr. Michel. “Because of a carefully crafted blend of theoretical study and practical application, Webb alumni are recognized by the industry as being exceptionally well prepared to make immediate and lasting contributions.”

While 80% of Webb alumni serve the marine community, he noted, Webb graduates make an impact across industries as CEOs of companies and entrepreneurs in high-tech start-ups; as leaders in law, finance, higher education, retail and manufacturing — each building on the foundation of the Webb engineering education.

Campaign regional kick-off events will be held throughout next year, enabling Webb alumni, friends, and family to learn first-hand of the Campaign’s priorities, and provide an opportunity for live Q&A sessions with Campaign leadership and members of Webb’s administration.
