UDS says the order is in line with its strategic plan to spearhead the development and operation of efficient, cost-effective diving and support vessels in the oil and gas industry.
Andy Warhol is planned to be delivered mid 2018 with the second vessel following at the end of 2018. Vessel number two is to be confirmed by end of April 2016.
Norway’s Marin Teknikk has entered into a contract with Wuchang Shipbuilding for delivery of design and engineering for both ships.
The vessels are being built to a newly developed MT6023 DSCV design, and will be equipped with an 18 men diving system for operations down to 300 m water depth.
The MT6023 DSCV has been developed for demanding operations worldwide. The vessel will have a length of 103 meters and a breadthof 23 meters, top class accommodations for 120 persons plus 18 divers, two heave compensated subsea cranes, one 150 ton offshore crane with depth capability to 3,000 m water depth, and one 20 ton offshore crane for operation down to 300 m water depth. In addition, it includes arrangement for two WROVs (unmanned remote operated submarines/robots) for operation down to 3000 meters water depth.
Marin Teknikk says it has designed a cost efficient and functional Diving & Construction vessel with high focus on safety for the crew/divers, and following up designing environment-friendly, modern and advanced multifunctional offshore vessels to compete in a market with very low oil and gas prices.
With more than 800 sq.m open work deck area with deck strength of 10 ton/sq.m and a smaller storage on top of dive hangar, the design creates a good platform for the vessels operation and function.
The vessels will be built according to DNV GL requirements, included the new SPS code; DNV GL + 1A1, EO, SPS, DYNPOS AUTR, DK(+), HELDK-SH, COMF-V(3), CLEAN DESIGN, DSV-SAT, DSV SURFACE, CRANE, ICE C, NAUT-OSV(A), BWM-T, REYCYCLABLE.

That’s heartening news for Offshore Support Vessel (OSV) operators such as Tidewater, Edison Chouest, Bourbon, Hornbeck Offshore, Seabulk and Maersk, which are dealing with the current challenging offshore oil and gas market. In a presentation at the recent Johnson Rice 2015 Energy Conference, Tidewater reported it had 38 vessels stacked as of the end of June. It has also announed plans to scrap 11 older vessels.
In its most recent monthly report, Baker Hughes reported that there were 29 drilling rigs operating in the Gulf of Mexico, down from 59 a year ago.
Mordor Intelligence’s report, the Global Offshore Support Vessel Market, focuses on the market sectors by vessel type, including Anchor Handling Tug/Anchor Handling Towing Supply Vessels (AHT/AHTSs), Multi-Purpose/Multi-Role Supply Vessels (MPSV), Platform Supply Vessels, Construction Support Vessel (CSV), Specialty Vessels and others. It also breaks down activity by region: North America, Europe, the Asia-Pacific (APAC), South America and Middle-East & Africa (MEA). The report analyzes and projects the market share of each region for the next 5 years.
Most promising regions for OSV market are the Gulf of Mexico, Brazil, West Africa, the North Sea, South East Asia, the Middle East and Asia. Mordor Intelligence estimates that major part of the demand will be for AHTS, PSVs, and seismic research vessels.
As oil and gas explorations move towards deeper waters, explains Mordor Intelligence, multi-functional offshore support vessels are now called upon to perform different tasks, and have created various niches or categories within the market. Present day offshore support vessels are equipped with increased cargo capacity, panoramic navigation bridge visibility, large accommodation spaces, enhanced crew amenities and state-of-the-art propulsion and automation systems.
According to Mordor Intelligence, AHTS vessels comprise a 56% of the market share, followed by Platform Support Vessels. Inspection, Maintenance and Repair (IMR) Vessels are generally equipped with large accommodation spaces, heavy lift cranes, helidecks and streamlined bow forms for operation in harsh environments. Vessels specialized for multi-tasking carry out maintenance and repair operations on platform facilities, as well as subsea pipelines and equipment.
He succeeds Jon Dunstan, who has resigned to pursue other interests outside of the company but will remain with it to hand over and assist Captain Kumar until February 2016.
Capt. Kumar, 55, has more than 25 years of experience in the marine industry. Prior to his appointment as CEO, he was Group Chief Operating Officer and executive director of EMAS Offshore’s parent, Ezra Holdings Limited. He has stepped down from those positions to concentrate on his new role with EMAS Offshore.
Prior to joining Ezra, he was an Assistant General Manager of Malaysian based offshore support services provider Bumi Armada Navigation Sdn Bhd.
Capt. Kumar is a qualified Master Mariner and holds a Certificate of Competency as Master of a Foreign Going Ship issued by the Malaysian Marine Department. During his seagoing career he held various positions onboard Malaysian International Shipping Corporation vessels.
