Brodosplit cuts steel for LNG fueled containerships

“By building these ships we enter a market niche that will enable sustainable business operation, bigger engagement of capacities and acquisition of references for the building of ships that will be in higher demand in the near future,” says Tomislav Debeljak, CEO of Brodosplit and owner of Brodosplit Shipping Company.

With an individual deadweight of 24,000 dwt, the vessels will be over 184 meters long and 27.5 meters wide. They will have a capacity of 2,000 TEUand reach speeds of up to 18 knots.

The containerships feature two-stroke dual fuel (LNG/MGO) engines built under license from MAN by Brodosplit’s diesel engine factory, which will also build the ships’ LNG tanks.

Transpetro cancels two LPG newbuilds at Vard Promar

It reported today that it has been notified that Petrobras Transportes S.A. (Transpetro) has terminated the contracts for two liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carriers on order at 50.5% owned indirect subsidiary Vard Promar.

The vessels in question are the last two of a series of eight LPG carriers originally contracted at the Brazilian shipyard in June 2010, for delivery from Vard Promar between 2014 and 2016. The combined contract value for the series of eight vessels was $536 million.

The first of the eight vessels, the 8,000 cu.m Oscar Niemayer, was delivered this past July.

Singapore listed Vard, which is 55.63% controlled by Fincantieri, says that the construction of the two vessels that have now been canceled is “at a very early stage.”

Vard is currently reviewing its overall exposure to the Brazilian market, and it says that the termination of the contracts – if effective – is “expected to reduce the company’s overall exposure. At the same time, the company intends to claim compensation from Transpetro for damages in relation to the terminated contracts.”

Vard says the impact of the termination is not expected to have a material effect on the earnings per share of the Group for the financial year ending December 31, 2015.

First 18,000 TEU box ship is on its way to U.S.A.

The vessel will later call at the Port of Oakland on December, 31.

CMA CGM  Group Chairman and CEO Jacques R.Saadé made the decision to deploy an 18,000-TEU capacity vessel to the U.S.

CMA CGM will be the first carrier to call at a U.S. port with vessels of this size. It says it reflects its faith in the long-term growth potential of the U.S. economy and its commitment to increasing its U.S. market share.

A pioneer in deploying large-capacity vessels to the U.S., the CMA CGM Group has been working closely with the Ports of Los Angeles and Oakland to ensure there is sufficient infrastructure to support an 18,000 TEU vessel.  It says it looks forward to working with other ports throughout the U.S. as they begin similar assessments of their infrastructure.

CMA CGM  offers 23 shipping lines connecting the U.S. to the rest of the world and employs more than 800 people in the U.S. through its subsidiary CMA CGM (America) LLC.

The U.K. flagged CMA CGM Benjamin Franklin will be deployed on the Pearl River Express, a service connecting the main China ports, including Xiamen, Nansha and Yantian, with the U.S. West Coast ports.

The 399.2 m x 54 m vessel was delivered December 4 by shipbuilder Shanghai Jiangnan Changxing Heavy Industry Co., Ltd.

Chinese liftboats to have Cat diesel electric propulsion

Identical diesel-electric systems, comprising four Cat Propulsion MTA-523 1500 kW azimuth thrusters driven by electric motors and soft starters as well as eight Cat C32 generator sets, will be delivered for each vessel.

“As a comprehensive power and propulsion solutions provider for the marine industry, we’re pleased to continue to integrate our full portfolio of offerings in our customers’ operations,” said Wang Xiaohua, Caterpillar Propulsion sales manager.  “China remains an area of strategic importance for us and this particular order is significant because it is the first time in China that we have supplied a full diesel-electric propulsion solution, including engines, propulsion systems and main switchboards.”

The two vessels, designed by Shanghai Bestway Marine Technology Development Company Ltd, are being built for Chinese owner Mekers Offshore Company Ltd and are due for delivery in summer 2016.

Over the course of 2016, Caterpillar will also supply all of the other components in the electric power system.

In addition to the main switchboard, Caterpillar will provide power management systems, central monitoring and alarm systems, transformers, uninterruptible power supplies and variable frequency drives.

MTA azimuth thrusters incorporate a number of key features to support effective vessel operation. They are hydro-dynamically optimized for good in-water performance. Available in both L-drive and Z-drive configurations, MTA azimuth thrusters can be supplied with controllable or fixed pitch propellers. Blade and hub materials are either bronze or stainless steel and the complete structure is designed to minimize the cost of through-life maintenance and to maximize the duration of in-service operation.

Built for reliability in harsh conditions, C32 generator sets have high efficiency and a minimized environmental footprint integrated into the design. The units can accept 100% load rate in one step and their integrated control system protects the power supply and offers scope for remote monitoring. Cat C32 generator sets are available in a power range from 830 ekW to 940 ekW.

DDG 1000 is out on sea trials

 No other details yet, but a couple of photos have been released and a couple of video clips have cropped up on YouTube, all of which show the dramatic difference between the vessel’s stealthy tumblehome hull form with wavepiercing bow and the exteriors of more traditional destroyers.

The “Star Wars” flavor of the ship is not confined to its external appearance: DDG 1000 introduces a wide range of new technologies including Electric Drive/Integrated Power Systems, ship control and damage control automation, and a totally integrated, ship-wide command & control systems. Generating far more power than the DDG 51 ships, DDG 1000 is suitable for future deployment of directed energy beam weapons and the electromagnetic railgun, both of which are under intensive development.

Esvagt orders new design wind farm service vessel

Situated 50 km off the Belgian coast the Nobelwind project, together with the existing Belwind 1 project, will require a purpose built service operation vessel (SOV) to support the technicians working in the wind park.

Norway’s Havyard Design & Solutions has been commissioned to design the vessel and supply an equipment to the shipbuilder, Turkey’s Cemre Shipyard. which is set to deliver the vessel in the second half of 2017.

The vessel’s Havyard 831 SOV design is based on a ship and service concept, developed by Esvagt in synergy with MHI Vestas & Havyard Design, that draws on several years of experience in servicing wind farms further offshore.

For the past five years, Esvagt has provided the base for MHI Vestas Offshore Wind technicians servicing the 165 MW Belwind 1 project, and the new contract continues that partnership.

The new purpose build SOV will be 58.5 m in length, with a beam of 16.6 m and will be able to support up to 22 technicians in single cabins. It will be equipped with Esvagt’s unique safe transfer boats (Esvagt STB) to transfer technicians, tools and spare parts to the turbines.
“The market for big service vessels for offshore windfarms is a relatively new one, and, in cooperation with Esvagt, we have entered this market at an early stage,” says Gisle Vinjevoll Thrane, Senior VP Sales, Havyard Design & Solutions. “The windmills used to be serviced by small, fast-moving boats that transported personnel and equipment daily to and from the shore. More and more wind farms are now serviced by bigger ships where the service personnel work and live on board for prolonged periods and access the windmills by means of a gangway installed on the mother ship or small boats launched from the mother ship. This is a safer and more profitable way of servicing the wind farms, particularly those far offshore.”

“The Havyard 831 SOV was developed to fill a new niche in this market, namely smaller wind farms,” says Mr. Thrane. “The new design is smaller than the ships built so far. It is compact and efficient, but at the same time has ample capacity to transport service personnel and equipment. This design will make it profitable to service even smaller wind farms, and we see a potential to deliver many designs to this segment.”

The Havyard 831 SOV has a spacious and comfortable interior with sufficient capacity to accommodate wind farm service personnel in addition to the ship’s own crew. It has also been designed with good storage capacity for equipment and tools below deck and for containers on deck.

The ship is equipped with three small boats that can be launched to transport service personnel to the windmills.

The diesel-electric propulsion system ensures economical and environmentally friendly operation, both in transit and when the ship is in position at the wind farms. The hull has been designed to ensure low fuel consumption and to move in a way that ensures maximum comfort for the crew and service personnel on board.

The ship has sufficient fuel capacity etc. for at least 30 days’ operation between port calls.

Havyard has a long relationship with Cemre Shipyard. The Turkish yard has delivered the hulls for more than 30 of the newbuilds Havyard has delivered since 2005. In recent years, the shipyard has also delivered completed newbuilds for Norwegian and other customers, including cargo vessels, fishing vessels and seismic support vessels.Havyard says that the close cooperation built with Cemre through the hull deliveries will continue and develop now that the yard is to build its first Havyard design vessel.

 

GD NASSCO delivers first ECO tanker to APT

The Jones Act tanker is the first of a five-tanker contract between NASSCO and APT, covering design and construction of five 50,000 deadweight-ton, LNG-conversion-ready product tankers with a 330,000 barrel cargo capacity.

In addition to being LNG conversion ready, the 610 ft long ECO class tankers are a new “ECO” design, offering significantly improved fuel efficiency and the latest environmental protection features including a Ballast Water Treatment System.

Helping achieve the fuel savings are a G-series MAN Diesel & Turbo ME slow-speed main engine and an optimized hull form.

“The delivery of this new vessel symbolizes the future of American shipping: innovative, cost-effective, and green. The Lone Star State, along with the four others we are currently building for APT, will be among the most fuel-efficient and environmentally-friendly tankers—anywhere in the world,” said Fred Harris, president of General Dynamics NASSCO. “These tankers are 33 percent more fuel efficient than the previous five tankers built by NASSCO for APT. We are proud to be leading the charge in building these next generation of tankers.”

The ships have designed by DSEC, a subsidiary of Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) of Busan, South Korea. The design incorporates improved fuel efficiency concepts through several features, including a G-series MAN Diesel & Turbo ME slow-speed main engine and an optimized hull form. The tankers will also have the ability to accommodate future installation of an LNG fuel-gas system.

Shell cuts steel for LNG bunker vessel

The steel cutting ceremony took place at the shipyard December 4, with representatives from Shell and the shipbuilder in attendance.The new LNG bunker vessel will be based at the port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands, and will load from the new LNG break bulk terminal currently under construction by the Gas Access to Europe terminal. Once ready, it will deliver to LNG-fueled vessels in northwest Europe. The vessel is also seagoing and, therefore, able to bunker customers at other locations.

Shell says the vessel will be “pioneering in design.” It will have a capacity to carry 6,500 cu. m of LNG fuel and will be highly efficient and maneuverable. Featuring an innovative transfer system and sub cooler unit, it will be able to load from large or small terminals and able to bunker a wide variety of customer vessels.

Finland’s Containerships Ltd Oy will be the launch customer for the vessel’s services, after signing an LNG supply agreement with Shell on November 24.

As we reported earlier, Containerships Ltd Oy is to charter the two 1,400 TEU LNG fueled containerships currently being built for Nordic Hamburg Group at China’s Yangzhou Guoyu Shipyard .

The vessels will receive LNG fuel from Shell at the port of Rotterdam, after the LNG bunker vessel becomes operational in mid-2017.”This is a significant landmark in bringing this innovative LNG bunker vessel with cutting-edge technology to reality,” said Dr Grahaeme Henderson, Vice President of Shell Shipping & Maritime.

MAN engines to power Mols-Linien superferry

In total, four 20V28/33D STC engines, each delivering 9,100 kW, will drive the four waterjets that will power the 109-m, wave-piercer.

“This is an important order for us and a welcome addition to our existing references in the high-speed ferry segment,” said Lex Nijsen – Head of Four-Stroke Marine – MAN Diesel & Turbo. “It is a technically-enhanced, repeat order with our newest, state-of-the-art engine; a success that builds on our ability to deliver engines with unrivlled fuel consumption in their class within a tight, customer-defined schedule. Importantly, it also builds on our existing good relationships with both Incat and Mols-Linien.”

Engine delivery is due over two shipments in September and October, 2016.

KatExpress 3, which is scheduled for completion by March 2017, will have 1,000 tonnes deadweight, with seating capacity for 1,000 persons and up to 411 car spaces, or a combination of cars, trucks and other vehicles.

The newbuilding’s near-sisterships KatExpress 1 and KatExpress 2 are both currently in service for Mols-Linien and were also built by Incat.

The MAN 28/33D STC is a compact, powerful engine with a high power-to-weight ratio. It is fully compliant with current environmental standards and employs an advanced SaCoSone engine-control system. The engine has been installed in several ferry applications and is also regularly employed by naval segments.
