Foreign content won’t affect U.S.-built status of NASSCO ConRo duo

OCTOBER 31, 2017 — As we reported in September last year (see story), GD NASSCO’s $511 million contract to build two 265 m LNG-capable ConRo vessels for Matson means that NASSCO’s long time Korean partner DSME subsidiary Daewoo Ship Engineering Company (DSEC) will get a $120 million contract to design the ships and supply materials.

Now the U.S. Guard’s National Vessel Documentation Center has issued a determination letter finding that the vessel’s foreign-sourced content won’t adversely affect their Jones Act status as having been built in the U.S. at NASSCO’s San Diego shipyard and eligible to engage in the U.S. coastwise trade.

The letter gives some interesting insights into exactly what foreign sourced material will go into the ships (it amounts to 1.07% of the approximate steelweight).
