ASRY inks deal for install BWTS on tankers

JUNE 21, 2018 —Bahrain-based maritime repair and fabrication facility ASRY recently inked a deal with Egypt-based Arab Maritime Petroleum Transport Company (AMPTC) to install Ballast Water Treatment Systems (BWTS) on part of its fleet. One BWTS has been installed on the Sea Jewel, a 112,081 dwt Very large Crude Carrier (VLCC) under the agreement, with a further two more vessels agreed to have installations in the coming months. Negotiations continue to extend the agreement to include more installations throughout this year and next.

AMPTC owns and operates a fleet of LPG carriers, crude oil carriers, and product tankers.

ASRY Ship Repair General Manager Magdy Sharkawy, says ASRY has “a long and trusting partnership with AMPTC, and we’re happy to be chosen as their partner to optimize their fleet for the new BWTS regulations. More of our regular customers are now moving forward with their BWTS plans and we have been working closely with them from both an engineering and installation perspective to make these decisions as efficient as possible.”

BWTS from Hyundai will be installed in the AMPTC vessels. ASRY has a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Hyundai to be a “preferred yard” for both BWTS and exhaust gas scrubber installations. The MOU sets out a framework for preferential cooperation that includes the retrofit of BWTS and scrubbers, takes Hyundai Global Service as one of the preferred suppliers to ASRY for Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) equipment, including two-stroke and four-stroke engine main equipment parts and spare parts, and also all commits to joint undertaking of the required training to optimize the installation process.
