OCTOBER 31, 2017 — Japan’s Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has developed a mariner safety education system that uses virtual reality (VR) technology created by Tsumiki Seisaku Co., Ltd.

It uses easily-portable VR goggles, enabling seafarers to train safely regardless of location: onboard, in an office, or at a training center

The system uses VR technology to replicate various training scenarios and work operations, offering a new level of realism and immersion.

Initially the training content focuses on preventing accidental falls, a major cause of injuries, and will be expanded to cover other training needs.

MOL will introduce the VR training to more vessels while expanding the range of simulated experiences to provide more training in onboard safety.
