FEBRUARY 12, 2014 — Japan’s Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. (K Line) is to integrate a package of advanced environmental protection and energy savings systems into a 7,500-unit car carrier on order at shipbuilder Japan Marine United Corporation.
K Line says the ship will be the flag ship of what it calls the “Drive Green Project” which includes constructing total of eight new similarly-designed PCC’s announced in press releases in late 2013 and earlier this year.
The “Drive Green Project”, aims to reduce CO2 emissions per vehicle transported by adapting advanced hull design and energy saving technology. The goal is to cut CO2 emissions by 25% or more compared to a conventional design.
The ship will be fitted with what K Line says will be world’s first NOx generation suppression device to be installed on a main engine. It reduces both CO2 and NOx emissions by a combination of an exhaust gas recirculation system and a Kawasaki Heavy Industries water fuel emulsion system. The SOx reduction will be by a scrubber developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. and Mitsubishi Kakoki Kaisha, Ltd.
It is planned that both systems will be used onboard as a trial. The NOx generation suppression device programs is being supported by Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. The NOx suppression device and the SOx scrubber are a ClassNK R&D project.
In addition, energy-saving LED lighting will be adopted throughout almost all of the ship, with the power for the LED lighting on the car decks being supplied by a solar power generation system by Solar Frontier K.K.
