Langh scrubber gains class approval

Scrubber in ms Laura has been in operation for more than one year

AUGUST 1, 2014 — The DeltaLangh exhaust gas cleaning system on Langh Ship’s m/s Laura has received final class approval from Germanischer Lloyd. This is a significant milestone for the recently established scrubber provider.

Finnish-headquartered Langh Ship developed its environmentally friendly closed loop scrubber solution, which also efficiently cleans the scrubber’s washing water. The system uses caustic soda to clean the exhaust gas. The water content of the residual sludge from the patented water treatment process is very low and therefore minimizes the amount of waste. Alternatively, the scrubber can be used in an open loop mode with sea water.

The scrubber is now available to other shipping companies through DeltaLangh Ltd.

DeltaLangh was established in June 2014 when Deltamarin Ltd and Oy Langh Ship Ab came together to offer a cost effective and reliable solution to shipping companies for tackling the challenge caused by the sulfur limits in the SECA area. This area includes the Baltic Sea, the North Sea, the English Channel, North American coastal area and the U.S, Caribbean Sea areas. The current limit is 1%, but from January 1, 2015 all ships operating in the SECA area must limit emissions to correspond with the use of fuel with a sulfur content of less than 0.1%.

“DeltaLangh has already begun installing similar exhaust gas cleaning systems on our other four vessels. The installations are expected to be fully operational on January 2015, when the new regulation comes into force,” says Commercial Manager Laura Langh-Lagerlöf, who herself has been actively involved in the development process.

The DeltaLangh scrubber has already been in operation for one year onboard M/S Laura, a 6,500 DWT general cargo vessel equipped with a 6 MW main engine.
