Hanjin ships to plug into shoreside power with SAMCon

JANUARY 27, 2014 — Eleven Hanjin Shipping containerships calling the ports of Long Beach and Oakland, CA, are to be fitted with SAMCon high-voltage onshore power connection facilities from L-3 SAM Electronics.

SAMCon will enable the vessels to meet  California clean air regulations scheduled to come into effect early in 2014 that require ships to use shoreside electrical power when berthed.

“We are proud to be supplying one of the world’s largest container carriers with a power connection solution that provides a cleaner and safer working environment at some of the major ports in the U.S.,” said Reinhard Swoboda, senior vice president of L-3 SAM Electronics. “With SAMCon, we are able to meet growing worldwide demand for the restriction of noise, carbon dioxide and other noxious emissions traditionally generated by vessels while berthed in the confines of heavily populated ports.”

Installed at the stern of each vessel, the SAMCon facility comprises a 40-foot container housing a complete range of electrical components designed for seamless acceptance of up to 7.2-MVA transferrable power at 6,600 volts together with a medium-voltage switchboard, control and monitoring facilities, and a customized interface between ship and shore. Components also include an extendable cable reel drum for direct connection to shore-based power sources.

The modular SAMCon system can be easily adapted for different types of vessels and container configurations. SAMCon systems are already in use around the world, with sytstems aboard Hapag Lloyd vessels docking at the ports of Long Beach, 
Los Angeles and Oakland, CA.
