SEPTEMBER 16, 2016 — Norway’s Color Line says it is to build the world’s largest hybrid ferry and will put it into service on the Sandefjord, Norway – Stromstad, Sweden, route from 2020.

The ferry will be a plug-in hybrid with the batteries being charged via a power cable with green electricity from dedicated shore facilities, or recharged on board by the ship’s generators.

The ferry, with the working title “Color Hybrid,” will have almost double the capacity of the vessel it will replace, with a length of about 160 meters long and a capacity of 2,000 passengers and 430-500 cars.

The company did not say what the ferry would cost or which shipyard would build it.
