Scandlines completes three more hybrid ferry conversions

JUNE 24, 2014 — Corvus Energy and Scandlines have completed the conversion of three more ferries to hybrid operation — the M/V Deutschland, M/V Schleswig-­‐Holstein and M/V Prins Richard.

Based on the success of Scandline's first hybrid conversion, the MF Prinsesse Benedikte, the latest three vessels each use a 2.7MWh Energy Storage System (ESS) consisting of 399 Corvus Energy AT6500 advanced lithium polymer batteries integrated with Siemens drive systems.

Scandline now operates the world's largest fleet of hybrid ferries. They operate between Puttgarden, Germany, and Rødby, Denmark, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year with sailings every 30 minutes from each side.

The newly refit hybrid ferries deliver significantly reduced greenhouse gas emissions, improved maintenance costs and optimized engine performance resulting in significantly decreased operating expenses.

The adaptable modular Corvus ESS allows vessel system integrators and designers an alternative source of high energy that creates the opportunity to redesign systems to reduce system complexity and costs throughout the vessel, providing load leveling, peak shaving, backup power and spinning reserve duties.
