USCG Cyber Command warns of ransomware threat

DECEMBER 28, 2015 — Ransomware is a type of malicious software (malware) that infects a computer and restricts access to it until a ransom is paid to unlock it — and occurrences have been cropping up in the maritime domain.

What ransomware is, and how to prevent and mitigate it, is the subject of the first issue of a new bi-weekly maritime cyber bulletin launched by the U.S. Coast Guard Cyber Command to give a greater understanding of the threats and hazards that impact the marine transportation system.

The first bulletin has just been posted on the USCG's Homeport website (go to Cyber Missions -Cyber News), responds to recent occurrences of ransomeware in the maritime domain.
