Robert Allan to keynote Marine Log Tugs & Barges 2016

APRIL 6, 2016—Marine Log is proud to announce that renowned naval architect Robert G. Allan, PE, will provide the keynote address for the Marine Log Tugs & Barges 2016 Conference & Expo, which is scheduled for May 10-11, 2016 at the Hyatt Olive 8 in Seattle, WA.

“Mr. Allan is known the world over—as is Robert Allan Ltd.—for innovative designs for escort tugs, fireboats, ferries, offshore vessels, search and rescue vessels,” said John R. Snyder, Publisher and Editor of Marine Log. “Robert Allan Ltd. Designs have been built and operate in every corner of the globe. We are extremely honored to have him kick-off our event on May 10.”

Mr. Allan is the Executive Chairman of Robert Allan Ltd., a Canadian naval architecture consultancy currently in its 86th year of continuous operation.

Born in Vancouver, Mr. Allan received an honors degree in Naval Architecture from the University of Glasgow (Scotland) in 1971, and joined his father in the family business in 1973.  Assuming ownership of Robert Allan Ltd. in 1981, he led the business into a position of wide-spread international recognition in the design of specialized commercial vessels of all types, especially tanker escort tugs and major fireboats.

He is a Fellow of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (UK) and a Registered Professional Engineer in British Columbia.

In 2005, he was awarded the Royal Institution of Naval Architects Small Craft Group Medal in London “…for his contribution to the field of workboat design, and in particular for his innovative work in the development of tugboats for all types of operation”, and the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers David W. Taylor Medal for 2005, “for notable achievement in naval architecture and/or marine engineering“, the only Canadian ever to be so recognized. In 2012 he was awarded the Maritime Museum of BC SS BEAVER Medal for Maritime Excellence, for “major contributions to British Columbia’s marine sector.”

In 2008, he secured the long term future of this world-renowned company with the sale of the business to a team of committed senior employees.
