APRIL 5, 2016 – Gothenburg, Sweden, headquartered Stena has signed a contract with China’s AVIC shipyard for four new RoPax ferries for delivery in 2019 and 2020, with an option for four more.

The first four ferries are planned to be used anywhere within Stena Line’s route network in northern Europe. The main engines will be “gas ready” and prepared for conversion to operation on methanol or LNG.

The vessels will have a capacity of more than 3,000 lane meters and will be able to carry about 1,000 passengers, with full on board services.

“During the past two years, our engineers have succeeded in developing a design that is not only 50 percent larger than today’s average RoPax ferries, but perhaps more important, they have also included the solutions to reduce emissions and increase efficiency developed at Stena in recent years,” says Stena Line’s CEO Carl-Johan Hagman. “These vessels will be the most fuel efficient passenger ferries in the world and set a new industry standard for performance, emissions and cost effectiveness.”

“We anticipate continued growth in demand for ferry transport in Northern Europe as well as in other parts of the world,” says Dan Sten Olsson, Chairman of Stena Line. “Through this investment, we are preparing Stena Line for continued growth.”

Finland’s Deltamarin Group says it will deliver a comprehensive engineering, procurement, construction and management (EPCM) package for the project both as a designer and as a provider of comprehensive project management services to support Avic Ship and AvicWeihai Shipyard in the vessel construction.

Deltamarin’s engineering package includes approval design, support in procurement handling and detail design. Deltamarin Floating Construction will carry out the construction management in close co-operation with Avic, and supplement the construction team with long passenger ship building experience. The project management services also include master planning, procurement of the project materials and material management, project information management and site supervision.

Deltamarin says it developed the concept of the vessel at an earlier stage in close collaboration with Stena.
