VT Halter signs contract with Poling & Cutler

VT Halter Marine, Pascagoula, Miss., recently signed a contract to build an 80,000 bbl double-hull ocean tank barge for Poling & Cutler Marine Transportation, Howard Beach, N.Y.

The ocean tank barge will be 332 ft x 74 ft x 25 ft and classed by ABS to carry clean product. VT Halter Marine plans to construct the barge at its Moss Point, Miss., facility.

"We're excited about this contract," Boyd "Butch" King, CEO, VT Halter Marine Inc. told Marine Log. "It will be based on an existing design that we've built before. Poling & Cutler has an option for a second barge that expires August 15."

Added King, "The 80,000 to 100,000 bbl tank barge market looks like it's beginning to open up. With the possibility of expansion of drilling in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico, especially with the current price of a barrel of oil, we think there is plenty of work down the road. We think this particular building boom will last five to seven years. We have work that will carry us through 2008."
