ClassNK releases new version of gas fueling guidelines

JANUARY 6, 2014 — Classification society Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK) has released the third version of its Guidelines for Gas Fueled Ships. It says the updated version provides comprehensive, up-to-date information on key design features relating to bunkering, hull structure, fire safety, and explosion prevention measures.

Tightened ECA restrictions on sulfur emissions that came into effect January 1, 2015 and availability of abundant LNG from shale gas reserves have seen an increase in gas fueled newbuildings and projects.

In response, the IMO accelerated its discussions of the International Code of Safety for Ships using Gases or other Low flashpoint Fuels (IGF Code) and its Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) approved in principle the draft of the IGF Code  in November.
