Havyard to build five more ferries for Fjord1

JUNE 9, 2017 — Norwegian ferry operator Fjord1 has ordered five all-electric ferries from Havyard. Worth over NOK 1 billion (about $117 million) the contract covers design, equipment and construction of the vessels. Slated for deliveries in 2018 and 2019, they will be built at Havyard Ship Technology's Leirvik, Norway, shipyard, which already has three ferries under construction for Fjord1.

The Sævik family is, through the company Havila Holding, the majority shareholder in both Havyard Group and Fjord1.

Three of the ferries will operate in the Hareid – Sulesund connection and two in the Magerholm – Sykkylven connection, both crossings in the county of Møre and Romsdal in western Norway.

The ferries are 111 m long and can hold 120 cars each.

All equipment on-board the ferries is arranged for battery operation, with complete diesel-powered back-up in the case of lengthy power blackout.

Havyard Design & Solutions will provide design and engineering for the vessels, Havyard Ship Technology will build them and the company's Power & Systems business will deliver hybrid propulsion system, bridge solutions and automation, battery system, charging station and electric system.

In the development work on the ferries, steps have been taken towards autonomous operations. Data tools, among other things, are employed in order to operate ferries in the most energy-efficient way possible, regardless of who is on the bridge.
