PureSOX scrubber picked for Great Lakes application

SEPTEMBER 15, 2016 — An Alfa Laval PureSOx scrubber will soon be in operation on the Great Lakes in a cement carrier operated by NovaAlgoma Cement Carriers, a joint venture of Algoma Central and Nova Marine Holding SA of Luxembourg formed in January this year.

The 2011-built, 14,600 dwt general cargo ship M/V Nacc Quebec is to be converted into an ecologically efficient self-discharging bulker at a shipyard in China.

Connected to its Wärtsilä four-stroke 6L38B main engine will be an Alfa Laval PureSOx exhaust gas cleaning system, configured with a U-design scrubber in a hybrid arrangement.

Closed-loop scrubbing is necessary on the Great Lakes because of the the strict wash water discharge requirements of the U.S. Vessel General Permit (VGP).

PureSOx offers well-proven water cleaning technology based on centrifugal separation, which will allow the M/v Nacc Quebec to sail continuously in closed-loop mode.

Nevertheless, a hybrid system was selected for full operational flexibility, giving it the additional ability to sail in open-loop mode when allowed.

Following careful consideration of both U-design and I-design PureSOx scrubbers, a U-design was chosen for this particular installation as it offered the best fit for the space on board, as well as the possibility of operating in bypass mode.

In selecting PureSOx for the M/v Nacc Quebec, prior experience with Alfa Laval and Alfa Laval equipment played an important role.
