Siemens to supply diesel electric systems for Tidewater PSV's

mmcpsvThe two 92.4 m platform supply vessels that Fincantieri Marine Group's Bay Shipbuilding Company is to build for Tidewater Marine LLC (see earlier story) are to have Siemens diesel electric propulsion.

Siemens Industry, Inc. (NYSE: SI) today announced that it has been awarded a multi-million dollar contract to equip the two PSVs with Siemens Blue diesel electric propulsion solution.

"Our innovative diesel electric propulsion system will provide a strong competitive advantage and a myriad of operational benefits."

The Siemens Blue multi-drive low-voltage propulsion system improves reliability due to failsafe features that will help the vessel owner lower maintenance costs, and increase efficiency and operational ease for the vessel and crew. The ships' advanced design will also decrease fuel consumption, resulting in reduced emissions of harmful greenhouse gases.

Siemens will provide the main generators, main propulsion and thruster motors, switchboards, power management system and its IMAC Automation system for alarm, monitoring and control functions, in addition to a unique, fully integrated Siemens electrical FiFi 2 system. As part of a Sole Source Vendor (SSV) solution, Siemens is also responsible for the designing, engineering, commissioning and project management of the diesel electric and automation system.

Earlier this month it was announced that Thrustmaster of Texas will supply each ship with two Thrustmaster model TH2500MZ Z-drives rated at 2,700 horsepower each. In the bow will be one Thrustmaster model TH1000MLRN retractable azimuthing thruster rated at 1,150 horsepower and one Thrustmaster model 66TT1000ML tunnel thruster rated at 1,000 horsepower. The Z-Drives and thrusters are designed and being built to ABS Polar Class 7.
