GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION:

Manage Alaska marine operations of company. Directly supervise Alaska based tug personnel. Develop marine operations and cost control programs for vessels. Hire, train and evaluate marine personnel as appropriate. Produce monthly operating reports. Assist in vessel scheduling as required. Assist in new project development interfacing with customers, etc.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

Supervise & Schedule Alaska Captains, Mates and Engineers

Recruitment , training & evaluating marine personnel

Develop and administer operating & cost control procedures on company vessels

Assist in new project development

Perform incident investigations, manage company safety program

Schedule routine company activities as required

Interface with customers on an ongoing basis

Operate company vessels as Captain if directed by President, Vice President, or General Manager

PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENTS

Accident & Spill Free Operations

Prompt and correct response to operating situations

Training, Professional skill development of marine personnel

Safety record of vessels and crew

Development of company operating procedures and acceptance by vetters

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Typing: 40 Words per Minute

Computer Skills: Word and Excel for Macintosh

Captains license on offshore towboats is preferred

Extensive Knowledge of tugboat & oil transportation industry.

Ability to deal with others using courtesy, tact, and good judgment.

Maintain the confidentiality of all sensitive communications.

Ability to understand and execute complex oral and written instructions.

Ability to work independently with minimal or no guidance. Ability to get along with office staff and vessel crew members.

Must be physically fit enough to board barges and tugs at sea and in port.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

Must be able to read, speak, write, type, and understand English in person and over the telephone.

Must be thoroughly familiar with tank barge operations, ship operations, and terminal/refinery operations.

SPECIALIZED SKILLS REQUIRED:

Captains license on offshore towboats

Valid Washington State drivers license and US Passport.

Ability to get along with office staff and vessel crew members.

Must be physically fit enough to board barges and tugs at sea and in port.

JOB CONDITIONS AND ENVIRONMENT:

Normal office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Takes communications 24 hours a day, including weekends, concerning changes in schedules and conditions.

Capable of making decisions and giving directions to facilitate prompt service delivery.

Frequently required to board tugs, barges, and ships, at dock or at anchor in all weather conditions and at all hours.

WORK EXPERIENCE:

5 years at sea on tankers or oil barges or equivalent military experience.

5 years of increasingly responsible management experience in the maritime industry.

EDUCATION/TRAINING:

Four year college education in Maritime or related studies

US Coast Guard license or US Coast Guard Tankerman endorsement on a Merchant Mariners document.

HAZWOPER (including Incident Command System) training within 90 days of being hired.

First Aid training.

CPR training.

OTHER DUTIES:

Performs related duties as assigned.

Perform in the company Spill Management team as assigned.

Assist with general office clean up as necessary.
