$11 BILLION PLUS ORDER BOOK
While new players like Norum may open things up a bit, for the most part the current newbuilding order book is dominated by the “Big Three,” namely, Carnival Corporation, Royal Caribbean International and Star/ NCL.
The current orderbook, excluding options, is worth more than $11 billion. Of the 25 ships on order, 13 are for Carnival’s various brands, five for Star/NCL and two for Royal Caribbean. The remaining three are for MSC.
A glance at the order book also indicates that the average size of newbuilding continues its upward climb—as does the price tag. Things aren’t helped by the fact that cruise newbuildings have to be paid for in (high flying) Euros while, traditionally, most cruise line earnings are in (depressed) dollars.
